About
Brought up in a market town in North Norfolk, surrounded by rural landscapes and wildlife, I found myself restless in the traditional route of education. In realising my passion for horses, from a young age, I chose to branch out and undertake an apprenticeship as an Equine Groom, leading me to land my current role, in north-west Germany, with my Australian Shepherd, Kili, and my beautiful horse, Ruby, working for, and being mentored by, a horse trainer.
Growing up in the idyllic setting of Norfolk shaped and influenced my passion for both animals and art. I found great pleasure during my teenage years in exploring my ability to draw animals and showcasing their personalities. Lately, in following my work in the equine industry, i have been honing in on my portraiture of horses.Through my paintings I try to capture not only the horses physical appearance but also their presence and story.
Through my art, I hope to showcase the gentle nature through which i see animal life and how they fit within their surroundings. In painting I aim to detail how deeply connected this state is within our lives.
A main desire of mine, for those of us who spend time with horses, is how in understanding them better, we might approach our communication with horses through a more empathetic nature, so to develop our relationships with them to a greater depth.
Artists statement
Over time my work has become hugely inspired by nature and the animals that I am around in my daily life, specifically horses. Working with and learning from these elegant creatures has taught me huge lessons in my art, and vice versa. Being so driven and inspired by both of these fields has increased my observational skills for the minute details, movements and expressions, and has reminded me just how powerful intention can be throughout my work, with both my art and horses.
Being surrounded by nature and animals, the inspiration and desire to paint comes flooding. My work has become a method of capturing the beauty and stories of these animals, and finding connections between realism, to capture their unique characteristics, and the movement and interpretation more abstract methods can bring about. I love to explore different methods and mediums through which I can best portrait and emphasise each feature.
Going forward on my journey I hope to keep challenging myself and growing my area of knowledge and skill sets, to keep stepping out of my comfort zone, in order to build on these foundations and to continue growing as an artist.
